“Trick Questions”
In this research lab we will be taking the “circus trick” as a starting point of reflection. The “trick” being a central element of the circus performance, we will explore and experiment with the implementation and staging of the dramaturgy of a circus trick across different art forms.
How can a sculptural process be staged as a trick? - How can the dramaturgy of a trick be applied to a piano solo? -How can a monologue be framed in the same way?
The research group will consisted of one circus artist and three artists from various other disciplines. Guided by Elena and Darragh the group will embark on an exploration of the dramaturgical nature of a trick based on the following central questions:
What are the mechanisms at work when staging a trick?
Can any action be framed as a trick?
What is the relation between trick and trickery? / trick and virtuosity?
The objective of this research is not to make artists of other disciplines do circus, but rather to examine and understand one of the constituting elements of circus performance and try to apply its dramaturgical logic and structure to different artistic contexts.
Contextualisation
In the research programme “Die Originale” 10 researchers (Meret Becker, Suzan Boogaerdt & Bianca van der Schoot, Jean-Michel Guy, Maksim Komaro, Rostislav Novák, Olle Strandberg, Julia Wissert, Elena Kreusch & Darragh McLoughlin) and 40 artists will collaborate on an interdisciplinary artistic interaction culminating in a two-day festival on 7th and 8th April. The audience is invited to come and discover the results of the research done in the workshops on the main stage, arranged specially in circular form. There is also a chance to see the contemporary circus productions “Somnium” by Compagnie MPTA and “mobile” by Jörg Müller and interested members of the public will have the opportunity to enter into a dialogue with the researchers in audience discussions. The all-day programme is accompanied by an exhibition by the photographer Lukas Berger and concerts by L.I.A and Geordie Little.
The visitors to the festival are warmly invited to spend the entire day following their own impulses and discovering new things.
